Dr. J. Matthew Byrd was announced as chief of staff for Perkins County Health Services during its board meeting on Wednesday, June 21. He steps into the position that was held by Dr. Shane Banks for the past four years. Dr. Banks will now serve as vice chair of staff.

A position at every hospital, the chief of staff is responsible for the medical staff at a facility. Dr. Byrd is no stranger to the role, as he served in the same position before Dr. Banks took over four years ago.

“With the smaller facilities like ours, it is somewhat of a tag team situation,” Dr. Byrd said about the position at PCHS. It is a requirement that the chief of staff be a medical doctor or a doctor of osteopathic medicine,” he said. Duties of the chief of staff include making sure medical policies and procedures are followed within the hospital, disciplinary actions of the staff if they arise, among other duties, he said.

Dr. Byrd said being the chief of staff at PCHS is enjoyable because the facility has a great medical team.
