Harambe! This is a Kenyan word which has recently come to my vocabulary.
Its meaning, very simply, is “coming together as one.” The context in which it was used focused on our students, “coming together as one” to benefit our young people and to celebrate their victories. Everyone who nurtures, feeds, educates, transports, encourages, and helps in any way shares in the success of our children.
After hosting the SPVA and District cross country meets the last two weeks, I am convinced that Perkins County exemplifies the meaning of harambe. I am continually impressed with the number of volunteers who step forward to help at these meets, not just from our schools but from the entire community. One volunteer commented that she had only done one small job, but since dozens of people did dozens of jobs, these meets went smoothly and the runners had positive experiences.
Our community does indeed “come together as one” to host these meets. I appreciate being a part of such a generous community.
