Wallace School was closed last Thursday due to the  heavy snow and bad roads—but with over 30 students absent, along with several athletic injuries, the Wildcats forfeited to Garden County on Friday even though school was back in session.
According to school secretary Betty Frederick, the students who have been sick have multiple symptoms that include aches, chills, high fevers, and some vomiting. She said several students have been confirmed to have H1N1 influenza.
Initially, the majority of ill students were in the elementary grades, said Frederick, but now many high school students have been stricken.
Thus far, none of the Wallace students have been hospitalized.
Frederick said doctors are instructing the sick students to remain out of school for 24 hours after their fever breaks and continues to stay down without fever reducing medications.
The school has a total enrollment of 185 in grades K-12.
