Twenty-one students in Diana Tate’s speech class at Perkins County High School entered this year’s Voice of Democracy contest sponsored by VFW Post 1252.
This year’s theme was, “Does America Still Have Heroes?”
The students submitted tape recorded speeches to three judges who selected four winners. They were judged on originality, theme content and voice.
The winners were announced Thursday, Nov. 12. Present were VFW Post chairman Gerald Engel, Auxiliary Chairman Dorothy McArtor and veteran Leon Rowley.
The winners are sophomore Christian Miyamoto, first place; freshman Shania Metcalf, second; junior John Prante, third; and freshman Robyn Kryfka, fourth.
Each of the four received a check for their entries: first—$25; second—$17.50; third—$12.50 and fourth—$7.50.
As winner, Miyamoto will enter regional competition.
The national prize is $30,000.
