The Wallace Wildcat basketball team enters the 2009 season under the leadership of a new Head Coach Dean Franzen.

Coach Franzen comes to Wallace from Arlington, Neb., and this is his first time coaching boys basketball.

Assisting Coach Franzen will be Derek Hutchison, as well as student manager Max Isenbart.

When asked for comment, Coach Franzen said, “This year’s squad is inexperienced, so our younger players will need to step up to fill the leadership roles on the team. Combining all of this with a completely new coaching staff creates some uncertainly about the upcoming season.” He added, “We have some athletic young players, but they lack the experience on the court.  I would anticipate consistent improvement throughout the year and we’ll need to see where that takes us.”

There are 17 boys out for the Wildcats team this season.  The Wildcats will begin the 2009-2010 campaign with only three returning letter winners, and only two returning starters.

In addition, the squad will be without a single senior on the roster leaving all underclassmen to move the team forward.

The Wildcats returning letter winners are Shawn Christensen (6’ 1” junior), Sean May (5’ 10” junior), and Lane Swedberg (6’ 3” junior), These young men provided significant contributions to the 2008-2009 season and the coaches expect their leadership to continue.

The Wildcats’ first games will be on Friday, Dec. 4 at home against the Maywood Tigers, and Saturday, Dec. 5 at Wauneta-Palisade.
