Lady Cats momentum builds with two more wins PDF Print E-mail

Last week the Lady Cats faced opponents on both Thursday and Friday nights.

Wallace vs. South Platte

On Thursday night the Lady Cats hosted South Platte.  The Lady Cats were primed and ready to play, and they took the early lead, out scoring their opponent by nine. The first quarter ended with the Lady Cats ahead, 12 to three.

The second quarter was a carbon copy of the first. The Wildcats outscored their opponent by six, and headed into the locker room leading 31 to 16.

The Lady Cats started the second half energized, and prepared to win.  The energy enabled the Wallace Wildcats to outscore South Platte by 17. The third quarter ended 53 to 21.

The Cats were ready for the fourth quarter, and as play progressed the coaches were able to get some of their less experienced players some valuable playing time. The Wildcats won the game 61 to 26. 

Offensively, senior Katie West led the team with 15 points (5 free throws), followed by senior Jena Aylward (2 free throws), junior Shanice Harris (2 free throws), junior Katelynn Hild (2 field goals), and sophomore Brooke Hochstetler each with 8 points. Junior Laura O’Brien had 6 points (2 free throws),  senior Josi Hasenauer had 4 points, junior Whitney Smith and sophomore Lexi Banks each had 2 points.  

Leading the team with assists were J. Hasenauer (3), West (3), senior Tarassa Swedberg (3), O’Brien (2), senior Arlana Whitson (1), Smith (1), Harris (1), Aylward (1), and senior Annika Wickizer (1).  Leading the team with offensive rebounds were Harris (5), West (3), Aylward (3), Hochstetler (2), and freshman Anna Griffiths (1).

Defensively, West led the Cats with 5 rebounds and 5 steals followed by Aylward with 3 rebounds, 1 block, and 1 steal. J. Hasenauer had 4 steals, Hochstetler had 3 rebounds and 1 block, Harris had 2 rebounds and 1 steal, Hild had 1 rebound and 2 steals, Swedberg had 2 rebounds, O’Brien and sophomore Danica Messersmith each had 1 rebound and 1 steal, and Smith and Wickizer each had 1 rebound.

Wallace vs. Paxton

Friday night, the Wildcats traveled to Paxton to face the Tigers.  The Lady Cats started the night hoping to build on the momentum they had Tuesday.  It was a battle of the Cats, but at the end of the first quarter the Wildcats were ahead by four, 20 to 16. 

The Lady Cats continued to play with energy, but the Tigers refused to let the Cats gain any momentum, matching the Cats shot for shot.  The Wildcats headed into the locker room at the half with their first quarter lead 31 to 27.

After half, the Tigers were ready to regain control of their home court. The Tigers outscored the Lady Cats by six, and the third quarter ended with the Tigers’ first lead of the game 45 to 47.

The Lady Cats, determined to regain the lead, took the court with resolve.  With every shot, momentum built, pulling the Lady Cats back into the lead, and dashing the Tigers’ hope of a home court victory.  

The Lady Cats won the match, outscoring the Tigers by 11 in the fourth quarter, with a final score of 61 to 52.

Offensively, West (4 free throws) and Aylward (6 free throws) led the Cats with 16 points each, followed closely by Hild with 14 (4 free throws and 2 field goals).  O’Brien had 6 points (2 free throws), Harris had 4 points (2 free throws), J. Hasenauer had 3 points (1 free throw), and Hochstetler had 2 points (2 free throws). 

Leading the team with assists were West (4), O’Brien (3), Hild (3), J. Hasenauer (2), Swedberg (2), and Aylward (2).

Hild had 3 rebounds and 5 steals, O’Brien had 4 steals, Harris had 3 rebounds and 1 steal, J. Hasenauer had 2 rebounds and 1 steal, Hochstetler had 2 rebounds, Swedberg had 2 steals, and Smith had 1 rebound.

Next Action

The Lady Cats hosted Dundy County/Stratton on Tuesday, Jan. 19.

On Thursday, the Cats travel to Arthur. The ladies will then play in the RPAC tournament in Benkelman, with first round starting on Saturday, Jan. 23.
