Meeting the growing needs of seniors is goal of North Platte business PDF Print E-mail

Serving counties of: Keith, Chase, Gosper, Furnas, Red Willow, Frontier, Dawson, Custer, Lincoln, Hayes, Hitchcock, Dundy and Perkins.

The Home Instead Senior Care® office, serving 13 counties in southwestern Nebraska, is under new ownership and management.  Established in 1990,  the franchise is now operated by Mary Jo Chatelain, who has purchased the business along with her husband, Steve.

Based in North Platte, the local office continues to help a growing number of seniors remain in their homes as they age.

The company’s CAREGivers, who are screened, trained, bonded and insured, provide companionship, meal preparation, light housekeeping, medication reminders, errands and shopping that can help keep seniors independent.

“We love the idea of offering families this option,” Chatelain said.

“We believe very strongly in the service we offer, and we want to make it available to the people in this part of Nebraska.”

Both of her parents are natives of Perkins County.  She is the daughter of Glen Houtz from Madrid, and the late Barb (Nelson) Houtz, who grew up in Elsie.

A graduate of Hastings High School, Chatelain earned a journalism degree from Kearney State College and taught there nine years.

Steve graduated from Auburn High School and earned a journalism degree from the University of Nebraska Lincoln. He is publisher of the Kearney Hub.

A hard experience with her mother-in-law gave Chatelin and her husband special insight into the need for services like those offered by Home Instead Senior Care®.

“Steve’s mom needed round-the-clock care in the early stages of her illness,” she said. “She had minimal medical requirements, we just needed someone to be in the house with her. We were all at least an hour away from her and struggled to coordinate in-home help.  In the end, our only option was to move her to a care facility.  If a business like Home Instead had been nearby, she could have stayed home where the familiar surroundings would have been a comfort to her. We remembered that experience when we decided to start our own business. We knew we wanted to make a difference in people’s lives, and we think we’re doing that through Home Instead Senior Care®.”

Chatelain said the majority of seniors polled in recent industry surveys–typically 90 percent–say they want to remain in their homes as they age.

Home Instead Senior Care® provides services to seniors wherever they might call home: private or rental residences, assisted-living facilities and care centers.

“Our services are designed for any living arrangement where an older adult simply needs human interaction or help with day-to-day activities,” she said.

“Services are available from just a few hours a day up to 24 hours, seven days a week–including weekends and holidays.”
