|Artbeat...Gallery features watercolors by cancer survivor group|
Special guests displaying at Meadowlark Gallery during August are the “Fun with Color” Cancer Survivors Watercolor Workshop painters.
This group meets Wednesday mornings at The Art and Gift Gallery in North Platte.
Art instructor Sandy Meyer offers the classes at no cost to cancer survivors. All supplies are provided by Meyer and Great Plains Health Care Foundation.
Meyer is well recognized in the art community, conducting workshops here and abroad.
Members of this group converge from Wallace, Paxton, McCook, North Platte, Cozad, Hershey and Sutherland to paint.
The artists enjoy the healing effects and joyful results of creating art as well as becoming more aware of the beautiful colors in their lives.
Wallace artist Donna Hahn has painted with the class since 2008. She said the class and Meyer, also a cancer survivor, have provided the best therapy available to cope with all the emotions that accompany a cancer diagnosis.
“The dues for the class are high,” said Hahn, “in that you have to have had cancer to join, but that is all that is required.”
Most of the members have never painted before. “It is amazing because in a short time Sandy has you painting a picture you are proud to take home and hang on your wall,” said Hahn.
Prior to joining the class, Hahn coped with her illness by writing poetry which resulted in a book, The Cancer Waltz, also available at Meadowlark Gallery.
The gallery is open Friday and Saturday evenings from 6-8 p.m.
An open house to meet the artists will be held Sunday, Aug. 15, 1-3 p.m. at the gallery, with refreshments provided by Perkins County Area Arts Council members.
