Solid wins last week at a home triangular gave the Lady Plainsmen confidence to take on Leyton, Bridgeport and Bayard at Saturday’s tournament.

Perkins County came out runner-up in the tourney on Bridgeport’s home court, defeating Leyton and Bayard. Bridgeport beat Perkins County in three sets, Bayard and Leyton in two, winning the tournament.

The girls had a great start on the day, defeating Leyton 25-21 and 25-11 with good hitting and defense by Gabrielle Patrick and Shania Metcalf.

“Tanya (Metcalf) was agressive on the blocks and served for 8/9 at the line,” commented Coach Penny Hite. Jessica Day was 6/7 passing, which helped on kills.

Shania Metcalf led in kills with six, while sister Tanya Metcalf led with eight blocks. Kristin Beck had 15 set assists on the day. Jessica made two ace serves.

Game two against Bridgeport lacked in blocking and defensive coverage. The Lady Plainsmen were defeated in three sets 20-25, 25-21, 21-25.

“They (Bridgeport) have a powerful outside hitter that kept us in check,” said Hite. “I am confident that if and when we see them again the outcome will be much different.”

Eleven kills were credited to Tori Osler. Leading in blocks was Tanya Metcalf with five, three ace. Kristin Beck put up 30 set assists and Jessica Day contributed with three ace serves.

The girls then defeated Bayard in two sets in game three 25-17, 25-15.

Shania Metcalf led with 8 kills, Tanya Metcalf had five blocks and three ace serves, Kristen Beck had 21 assists.
