The Plainsmen cross country team joined 21 other teams attending the Kearney Invitational on Monday, Sept. 27, and in spite of unpleasant running conditions, did well, said Coach Paula Wurst.

Temperatures in the 80s with no breeze sounds comfortable enough for spectators, but added to the higher humidity of eastern Nebraska, proved a challenge for the runners used to lower humidity.

The girls seventh place finish was outstanding,” said Coach Wurst. “We continue to close the gap on Dundy County.” The Lady Plainsmen scored 120 points with six finishers.

Ashley Kemling again set another personal record, and finished the race in 16:13. Supporting pack of Jessi Hoffert, Courtney Lyon and Krystal Gaar kept pace and finished a couple minutes later in 18:41, 18:56 and 19:08 respectively. “They are to be commended,” said Coach Wurst.

The boys placed 16th out of 22 teams, sticking close together throughout the race.

“The boys’ pack continues to be close together, and this will serve them well in the future,” said Wurst. “They are used to sticking together, and I have a feeling that when one of them chooses to take off faster, they will all follow and great things will happen! I continue to be impressed with the effort being made.”

Seth Burge had a particularly strong finish at UNK with a time of 21:32.
