A few strokes separate golfers from state competition PDF Print E-mail

Senior golfers Emily Kiolbasa and Steph Reichert both played well at the district golf tournament in Bayard Monday, Oct. 4, but nevertheless came up a few strokes short of qualifying for state.

Reichert finished 19th, with 54 on the front nine, and 56 on the back. Kiolbasa was right behind her in the 20th spot, with scores of 58 and 56.

“I think our play on and around the greens was just not as good today,” said Coach Troy Kemling. “These are the largest greens we play all year and it is easy to three or even four putt. The effort was there but often the first putt just didn’t finish close enough to the hole for an easy two putt.”

“Steph and Emily will be missed next year, not just for their golf games, but for the type of girls they are,” Kemling added.

As a team, Perkins County finished 10th with a score of 571. Chadron was first with 412 and Valentine second with 434.

Freshmen Shania Stickley, Carra Johnson and Capri Meyer garnered valuable experience for next year, being among the freshmen who got the opportunity to participate in districts.

“Their nerves got to them, and they really let it show on the greens,” said Kemling. “I have seen glimpses of greatness from each one. Time and effort will be needed to make competing at the state level a reality.”
