The Wallace Wildcats traveled to Grand Island on Wednesday, Nov. 10, practicing on the way, preparing for their first game in the state tournament.

Based on the Cats’ stellar season, and the fact that they won districts, the Lady Cats arrived in Grand Island seeded number three, and primed to face number six Dodge.

On Thursday, the Cats would face the Dodge Tigers at Grand Island Central Catholic at 12:30 in the afternoon.

In the first set the Wildcats struck first, but it was the Tigers who took the early lead 8 to 15. The Cats battled back to within two, 14 to 16, but the Tigers refused to relinquish the lead. The Tigers won the first set 20 to 25.

In the second set the Tigers once again took the early lead 5 to 13, but the Lady Cats rallied to tie the match at 23.

The Tigers took the next point with a shot off the block, but unlike the Brady match the Cats couldn’t tie the set a second time. The Tigers took the second set 23 to 25.

The third set saw a deflated Cats team; the Tigers took the early lead and refused to let the Cats gain any momentum. The Tigers took the third set and the match 13 to 25.

When asked about the match Coach Rohde said, ”Some days are just not your day!” He added, “Dodge did everything right and we just couldn’t get things going. We had a great season, and these are a great bunch of girls.”

Leading the team offensively against Dodge was Kerchal with nine points. Hild, O’Brien, and Smith each had three points, and Harris and Hasenauer each had two points.

Leading the team with set assists was Hild with 18, followed by O’Brien with 12.

Defensively, Harris and Smith led the team with 10 kills and one block each, followed closely by Gardner with nine kills and two blocks. Hochstetler had four kills and one block, and O’Brien had one kill.

This was a tough ending for a very talented Wildcat team. As a side note, Dodge placed third overall at state.
