Burn association to be organized
The Grant NRCS field office is hosting a workshop on organizing and executing prescribed fire operations, and to organize a burn association for Chase and Perkins counties.
The meeting is open to the public and is being held in Grant on Tuesday, Jan. 25 from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. MT in the Midwest Electric community room.
The burn association will be organized immediately after the burn workshop. Lunch will be provided.
The meeting will outline why prescribed fire is used, fire safety, fire behavior, how to put together a burn plan, and how to implement a burn plan.
The meeting will be of interest to anyone who would like to improve wildlife habitat, increase pasture forage value, control brome and red cedars, burn CRP, or gain access to prescribed burn equipment.
Landowners in Perkins and Chase counties are encouraged to attend.
Those who wish to attend should pre-register with Aaron Sisson, Farm Bill Wildlife Biologist for the NRCS. Register in person at the Grant NRCS office or mail a $5 check with name to Aaron Sisson, 927 Central Ave., Grant, NE 69140.
All who wish to attend should pay the registration fee so that adequate food can be provided for all who attend the workshop.
The formation of a landowner-based prescribed burn association will immediately follow the burn workshop. Through a prescribed burn association, landowners in the area will have access to prescribed burn equipment, the manpower to conduct a safe and effective burn, liability coverage, and burning expertise and support available to them.
Implementing prescribed fire to manage grasslands would be a big boost to grassland health and wildlife populations. For more information, please contact Aaron Sisson at (308) 883-1085.
