Lady Plainsmen advance to SPVA semis

In the first round of the 2011 Girl’s SPVA basketball tournament, the Perkins County Lady Plainsmen scored early and often as they raced to a 55-35 win over their counter-parts from Maxwell.
Tanya Metcalf, who had a stellar game for the Lady Plainsmen, connected on a jumper in the paint, then another score in the lane, and Perkins County was off on a 7-0 run.
Michi Prante hit a free throw and Jessica Day got a lay-up to finish the 7-0 start.
The Plainsmen continued to play excellent defense during the first quarter and forced six Maxwell turnovers. The first quarter ended with the Plainsmen leading 10-1.
The Lady Plainsmen’s defense caused the Maxwell girls to go 0-15 from the field in the first quarter.
In the second stanza, the Lady Plainsmen continue their stellar play outscoring Maxwell 19-9.
Although the Maxwell girls shot 66 percent from the field in the second quarter, they only got six attempts from the field as the Perkins County defense continued to cause problems for the Wildcats.
At the half time Perkins County had moved to a 29-10 lead.
The second half started with a quick basket by Jessica Day. By the end of the quarter, Day had another basket and offensive punch was helped by baskets from Matisyn Humphrey and two excellent cuts to the basket by Shalee Pollard who picked up four points in the third quarter.
The Plainsmen again caused the Maxwell offense to be very ineffective, hitting only two of 11 field goal attempts and adding four out of eight from the free throw line.
The third quarter ended with Perkins County leading 45-18.
The final quarter saw Maxwell outscore the Plainsmen 17-10, but the damage had been done. All the Plainsmen players suited saw action, and even though Maxwell outscored the locals by seven, they shot only six of 21 from the field and picked up five free throws on nine attempts for the quarter.
The unofficial stats saw the Maxwell girls shooting 11 for 54 from the field and 13-26 from the line. The Lady Plainsmen hit 44 percent from the field by hitting 21 of 48 field goal attempts and 14 of 27 from the line for the final 55-35 victory.
Tanya Metcalf led the Plainsmen with 17 points and was followed closely by Jessica Day who hit for 15. Kassie Schuett a 6-foot senior for Maxwell led their scoring with 17 points.
The Plainsmen defense caused Maxwell to turn the ball over 31 times in the contest and Perkins County out rebounded Maxwell 20-14.
The win advanced the Lady Plainsmen to the semi-finals round to face top seeded Sutherland.
