One bracket of the semi -finals of the girls’ SPVA basketball tournament pitted the top seeded Sutherland Sailors against the Lady Plainsmen of Perkins County. Perkins County moved into the bracket after defeating Maxwell earlier in the week.
Shania Metcalf opened the scoring for the Plainsmen 52 seconds into the first quarter on a jumper in the lane and that was quickly followed by a Sutherland field goal and then the first quarter became more of a defensive struggle as neither team could muster much offense.
The Plainsmen ended the quarter hitting on only two of 12 field goal attempts and Sutherland hit on three of seven plus one free throw, and at the end of the first stanza Sutherland had a 7-4 advantage.
In the second quarter, the Metcalf girls combined for three field goals as Tanya Metcalf got two and Shania added one along with a Tori Osler field goal and the half ended with the Sailors having a very narrow 16-14 lead.
After the half, the Plainsmen made a run at the Sailors to take a 19-18 lead with 5:27 left in the quarter and it appeared that the Sailors ship may have sprung a small leak. But the Sutherland girls quickly fixed the problem and then went on a 14-0 run and a 32-19 lead and never were threatened the rest of the contest.
The Sailors outscored the Plainsmen by 10 in the second half and a 47-35 win, to pick up a trip to the finals on Saturday night at North Platte Community College.
Makayla Hecht, Sutherland’s outstanding 6 foot senior center had another good night against the Plainsmen as she had nine points, five blocks and controlled the boards during the contest.
The Plainsmen did a decent job in not letting too many of Sutherland’s starters hurt them scoring, but the Sailors got a great effort off the bench from Nina Tilford as the a 5 foot 5 junior hit for 13 points in the game with nine coming in the fourth quarter. Kate Stewart also hit for double figures as she got 11 in the contest.
For the Plainsmen Shania Metcalf got nine points to lead the scoring. Tanya Metcalf had eight and Shalee Pollard picked up seven.
The loss to the Sailors put the Plainsmen in the consolation bracket against Hershey who was defeated by North Platte St. Pats in the other semi-final game 46-33.
Perkins County
vs Hershey
Saturday night the Plainsmen girls faced the Hershey Panthers girls. Perkins County saw a team that had struggled the night before against NPSP with their shooting but come out red hot and stay that way for most of the game.
The Perkins County girls shot pretty well for the first quarter hitting six field goals and a free throw, but the Hershey girls hit on two three-pointers, and seven two-pointers to take a 20-13 lead.
Daynlee Miller did the most damage in the first quarter for the Hershey girls as she burned the Plainsmen for 11 points with two two-pointers and two three-pointers.
The problem was that the Hershey team kept hitting the basket and forcing Perkins County turnovers. They hit for 15 more points in the second quarter. Perkins County only hit on two of six field goal attempts in the second and got two free throws to fall behind 35-19 at the half.
The third quarter was almost an instant replay of the first as Hershey again forced turnovers and hit 11 field goals and this time put 25 points up in the quarter while holding the Perkins County girls to 13.
The fourth period saw a slow down in scoring, but Hershey still put up twice as many points as Perkins County with a 10 to five production to end up with a very comfortable 70-37 win for the third place plaque in the 2011 tournament.
For Hershey, they had four girls hit in double figures. Brooke Frederick had 15, Daynlee Miller had 14, Cara Huebner had 12 and Sierra Young had 11. For the Lady Plainsmen, Jessica Day had 10 and Tanya Metcalf had nine.
The loss in the semi-finals stopped Perkins County’s run of SPVA Championship at five in a row.
