Lady Plainsmen senior  guard Jessica Day took the opening tip all the way to the basket and never let up in Perkins County’s 60-40 win over Hayes Center Thursday night in Grant.
Day went on to score a career-high 20 points, as she ran a steal all the way down in the first quarter and split two defenders on the way to the rack in the second quarter.
Junior forward Shalee Pollard got to the basket finishing defensive press breaks and making cuts behind the defense for a career-high 15 points in the game as well.
Pollard did hit a 14-foot set shot and a free throw, but spent most of the first three quarters making herself unstoppable under the basket.
Two of Day’s baskets gave Perkins County a quick 6-0 lead, but Hayes Center actually got a three pointer from guard Larissa Wach to take an 8-7 advantage.
Two Pollard field goals and a “three” from point guard Kristin Beck and the Lady Plainsmen threw the Lady Cardinals’ lead far away, never allowing them to recover it at 14-8.
The Lady Plainsmen shot 8-for-11 from the free throw line in the second quarter, and opened up a 13-point lead at halftime.
A third quarter eruption of 19 points, including a “three” and nine points from Day, put the game out of Hayes Center’s reach at 50-28 with eight minutes remaining.
Hayes Center guard Wach hit a second three pointer in providing the Lady Cardinals’ offense with its only spark with 12 points.
Fellow guard Tierney Tyan got to the basket for eight points, but more often found the lane blocked by good Lady Plainsmen interior defense.
Tanya Metcalf scored in every quarter for Perkins County and finished with eight points. She hit two short-range jump shots and also intercepted two passes defending her goal.
