With a team goal of qualifying for the state tournament in 2011, coach Chris Mestl has a lot of depth on the boys golf team to work with this year.
Five letterwinners return to this year’s squad: 2010 state qualifier Ben Ross, a senior; senior Zac White, sophomores Alex Johnston, Cole Whalen and Austin Thelander.
Other top prospects expected to contribute to the team are junior Trevor Lee, and sophomores Blake Poppe, Colton White and Jake Sexson.
New to the team are Justin Gentry, Skyler Condon, Logan Cunningham, Sean Farnsworth, Jeremy Hagan and Caleb Breazeale.
“Hopefully this depth will develop more consistency on our team,” said Mestl. “We hope to improve on back-to-back fifth place finishes in districts.”
The season will open today (Thursday, March 31) at a triangular with South Platte and Garden County at 3 p.m., the first of 11 regular season competitions over the next few weeks.
The Perkins County Invite will take place on Tuesday, April 19, at the Grant Golf Course.
The 2011 season will conclude with districts on Monday, May 19, at West Wind in Ogallala and state competition Tuesday and Wednesday, May 24-25, at the Kearney Country Club.
