Lady Swedes hand loss to Lady Plainsmen
By Pastor Vince Carrig
Stout forward Taylor Wolf broke a 39-39 tie with a transition jumper from eight feet away and propelled the Lady Swedes to a 47-41 win over Perkins County in Gothenburg Saturday night.
Wolf led all scorers with 17 points and salted away the Gothenburg girls’ first win in four outings with two free throws late in the game.
Wolf put up 14 of those 17 points in the second half, with eight of those 14 going through in the third quarter.
Senior forward Tanya Metcalf helped the Lady Plainsmen mount a comeback that put them in position to win. A left-handed floater from the middle of the lane tied the score 39-39, and the older Metcalf sister put away an inbounds pass to pull her team to within two points of the lead at 43-41.
Perkins County had four opportunities to tie the score in the closing minutes, but could not.
Guard Brittyn Munster scored most of the rest of the Lady Swedes’ points, striking for a three pointer and hitting all three free throws she shot to total 14 points.
Wolf and Munster combined for an 8-0 Gothenburg run in the third quarter that likely chiseled the game’s outcome in stone.
Munster stole a cross-court pass on the defensive side of the floor and ran it all the way down, and Wolf popped in three short-range shots to grow the Lady Swedes’ lead from 27-25 to 35-25.
Shalee Pollard and Tanya Metcalf co-led Perkins County with nine points apiece. Metcalf found Pollard wide open with a pass down the left lane
line just before halftime.
Guard Kristin Beck scored two three-pointers for Perkins County, and Matisyn Humphrey hit all four free throws she took in piling up eight points.
The 3-1 Sidney Lady Red Raiders visit Grant on Friday, Dec. 16.
The Lady Plainsmen head north to Ogallala on Dec. 20. The 2-2 Plainsmen girls play the 2-1 North Platte St. Pat’s Lady Irish on Dec. 22—postponed due to weather.
