Lady Plainsmen win 2011 Holiday Tournament
By Pastor Vince Carrig
The Lady Plainsmen won the 2011 Perkins County Booster Club Tournament as Tanya Metcalf’s three-point play kept Kimball’s late surge from spoiling a 46-41 win in Grant Friday afternoon.
In the year’s most complete and fundamentally sound performance, Perkins County’s Shania Metcalf downed two free throws and Shalee Pollard counted a shot right under the backboard to widen their team’s third quarter lead to 35-25.
Reserve guard Taylor Wismer, however, battled the Lady Longhorns back into contention with two three pointers in the third and another in the fourth quarter. Her last triple made the score 43-41 with 8.4 seconds left.
Pollard led all scorers with 14 points, including shooting eight-for-10 from the foul line.
Driving Lady Plainsmen pressed the issue, forcing three Kimball players to expire early with five fouls: guards Darbi Klinkhammer and Annie McCloud, and forward Tori Reader.
Reserve sophomore guard Kim Cook ignited Perkins County’s attack, driving half of the court for an “and one” three-point play, and dialing up from just inside the arc for five quick points.
Two Pollard free throws after Cook’s second quarter run, the Lady Plainsmen had the game’s biggest lead at 28-15.
Tori Reader, however, continued to get to the basket for the Lady Longhorns, and reserve guard Annie McCloud found success with mid-range jumpers.
Klinkhammer stole a point-to-point pass and redeemed it for points, and Wismer popped a “three” to ensure a frantic finish with a 37-35 score.
But Tanya Metcalf found Jessi Hoffert off an inbounds play, and Kristin Beck reached from the arc to keep Perkins County in control, 41-37.
Shania Metcalf swatted away several Kimball shots, including one that almost reached the bleachers. Her defensive presence for the Lady Plainsmen altered and skewed many Lady Longhorns shots.
The Lady Plainsmen improved their record to 4-5 and host 5-1 Dundy County-Stratton today (Thursday) and 7-1 Sutherland Saturday.
