Golfers open season at Bayard Invitational

The Perkins County girls golf team kicked off the fall sports season with their first match of the year on Thursday, Aug. 23 at Bayard.
The Plainsmen finished fifth out of eight teams, which included Bridgeport, Kimball, Gordon-Rushville, Creek Valley, Bayard, Mitchell and Scottsbluff JV. Perkins County’s score was 533.
Bridgeport took top honors with 426 team points. Kimball was second with 488 and Gordon/Rushville third with 507 points.
“I was encouraged that most of the girls improved on the back nine scores,” said Coach Troy Kemling. “The course plays so much differently than Grant’s. Most of the rough is irrigated and kept long so the ball doesn’t roll much.”
Individually, Carra Johnson came the closest to medaling, finishing in 11th place, losing in a scorecard playoff to 10th place Audra Sasse of Gordon-Rushville. Each scored 116 points.
“Carra played solid today for her first outing of the season,” said Kemling. “She struck the ball well most of the day but still lost strokes around the greens.”
Kemling also commended freshman Amanda Reichert, who performed well in her first varsity competition, scoring 131.
“She will file this experience away and draw upon it for future events,” said Kemling. “Her nerves will be calmer the next time around and she will know more what to expect.”
