Lots of activity at center

By Trish Stever
Perkins County Senior Center Director

The Senior Center had a great turnout for the Aug. 13 Volunteer Appreciation Day and Community Open House. There were 67 pieces of pie served and a little left over for dessert the next day.
Donna Lou plus Two did a fabulous job entertaining everyone in attendance. We sure appreciate all of the volunteers who keep the center in tip-top shape and the community for supporting the center.
There have been lots of enjoyable activities going on at the senior center. Every Thursday a fun giveaway drawing is held. Attendees bring items from fresh fruit to cookies and other sweets, then enter their name in a basket to win the items that were brought.
This month the seniors were surprised with a generous donation to Thursday fun giveaway. On Aug. 9 Loren and Edith Radel from Parachute, Colo. donated $100 worth of Hatch’s gift certificates; one-$20 certificate and eight $10 certificates.
Card party is held on the first and third Monday of each month. The Aug. 6 party was hosted by Gladys Tharp and Marguerite Ott. There were 19 people in attendance.
Lou Cornelius, Ruby Porter and Dorothy Meyer hosted the Aug. 20 card party which entertained 17 people. Due to the Labor Day holiday, there will be only one card party day in September. Join us on Monday Sept. 17 for a fun filled day of playing cards.
The senior center is happy to announce that Wanda Hajek has graciously volunteered to lead stretch exercise classes Monday through Friday at 10:30 a.m. A few people are joining in on this fun and healthy class. As always, we’d like to see even more seniors take advantage of Wanda’s generosity. Everyone is welcome and the only thing you’re required to bring is yourself.
The Thrift Shoppe continues to offer various household items, clothing, shoes and much more. The Thrift Shoppe is open the first Saturday of each month from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., on Mondays from 1 to 4 p.m. and Tuesdays through Fridays from 9 to 4.
The store will be closed Monday, Sept. 17, and Tuesday, Sept. 18, for seasonal changeover. Be sure to visit on Sept. 19 to see all of the fall and winter items that will be for sale. There will always be a friendly volunteer there to assist.
As always, delicious and nutritious meals are served every Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday at 11:30 and at 11 on Wednesdays. There’s no need to call in the day before, just let the center know you’ll be joining us the same day.
We also offer card games, pool playing, shuffleboard, and other activities, entertainment and programs.
