Ribbons earned at state fair
Several Perkins County exhibitors earned ribbons at the state fair in the pork carcass event.
Carcasses are ranked on percent lean, which is composed of tenth rib fat thickness and loin muscle area measured by ultrasound and hot carcass weight measured after slaughter.
Percent lean was calculated using the prediction equation from NPPC “Pork Composition and Quality Assessment Procedures,” 2000.
This equation estimates the pounds of standardized fat free lean.
The following Perkins County 4-Her’s earned ribbons at the state fair:
Tanner Burge: gilt (live) blue; carcass, blue.
Tanner Burge: barrow (live), blue; carcass, white.
Rebecca Cornelius: gilt (live) purple; carcass, blue.
Mariah Curtis: barrow (live) blue; carcass, white.
Riley Kosmicki: gilt (live) blue; carcass, red.
