Although the Lady Plainsmen ended up in sixth place in a field of eight teams, Coach Penny Hite said the girls played like champions at the Cozad Invitational on Oct. 20.
The girls lost to Alma 19-25 and 23-25 in their third game, having beaten Cozad in game two. The girls faced Valentine in game one, falling 11-25 and 21-25.
Earlier in the week, the Lady Plainsmen hosted the Kimball Lady Longhorns, losing in four sets.

“They did everything they could to try to win this game, said Hite. “They did what they were told and made some great plays happen,” said Hite. “Such confidence like that can only lead us and motivate us as we head into post season.”

A lot of quick reads on defense allowed the girls to have some fun offensively, said Hite.
“We played very well–this was probably one of Brandie’s [Ross] best games. She really reacted well to the ball,” said Hite.
The win was sealed by three ace blocks in a row at the end of the game by senior Shania Metcalf.
Two ace serves apiece by five of the girls was impressive, commented Hite.
“With that kind of aggressiveness, we are bound to be in the game!”
As a team the girls were 15/20 on defensive digs.

The Lady Plainsmen finished the set strong after “cleaning it up,” commented Coach Hite. She said the girls needed to get themselves awake and ready, struggling with serve receive.
Valentine is a strong team and the girls knew they were going to have to play tough.
“Only missing two serves the entire game, I’d say we made great improvement,” said Hite.

The girls continue to gain confidence with each game and have a lot more fight, said Coach Hite.
“The girls were resilient tonight,” Hite said, “They did such a good job in the second set by not giving up and staying strong.” They were so close in the third set, she thought  they pulled the one off the fourth set would have had a different outcome.
“Courtney McClenahan did a really good job tonight, as did Shania [Metcalf],” said Hite. “Both played very smart and passed well.
