Lady Cats try to sink the Sailors PDF Print E-mail

On Thursday night, Dec. 13, the Lady Cats traveled to play the Sutherland Sailors. Both teams were ready to play, but the Sailors took the early lead. At the end of the first quarter the Wildcats trailed by 15, 21 to 6.
The second quarter saw the Sailors with a renewed ambition, but the Lady Cats refused to give up. The Sailors outscored the Lady Cats by just two points, and they headed into the locker room, 15 to 32.
The Cats started the second half energized, and ready to play, but the Sailors refused to relinquish their momentum. The Sailors were able to gain 13 more points than the Lady Cats, lengthening their lead to 20 to 50.
The Cats seemed tired in the fourth quarter, and the Sailors were not ready to go quietly into the night. Both teams played a hard fourth quarter, but in the end the Wildcats could just never get the momentum they needed, and the Sailors were victorious. As the buzzer sounded at the end of the fourth quarter the Sailors won 23 to 70.
When asked about the game Coach Messersmith said, “Sutherland has a very good basketball team.” He added, “Our girls worked hard, and I am very proud of our effort. We did some good things and learned some things we need to continue to work on.”
Offensively, sophomore Christina Daniels led the Cats with 11 points, followed by senior Chelsea Sowle with seven points. Junior Paige Aylward had four points, and senior Anna Griffiths had one point.
Leading the team with offensive rebounds were Daniels (four), Aylward (two), Griffiths (one), senior Katelyn Melton (one), and junior Sara Hubbard (one). Leading the team with assists was Hubbard (three).
Defensively, Melton led the Cats with six rebounds, one block, and one steal, followed by Daniels with two rebounds, one block, and two steals. Hubbard had three rebounds, Griffiths had two rebounds and one steal, Sowle had two rebounds, and sophomore Morgan Messersmith had one rebound.
Next Action
On Tuesday, Dec. 18, the Cats will play host to the Medicine Valley Raiders. The girls JV will start at 3:30.
