The Perkins County basketball tournament of Jan. 15-17, 1947 included eight area teams, according to an old program found by a loyal Perkins County fan, Daryl Snyder.
Teams included Paxton, Grainton, Wallace, Venango, Hayes Center, Madrid, Grant and Elsie.
The Grant Plainsmen roster included Wayne Sides, Everett Woods, Clinton Priest, LaVern Poppe, Paul Bartlett, Bill Stout, Richard Kurkowski, Daryl Snyder, Marvin Brown, Stanley Edwards and Norman Gauger.
The Madrid Pirates included Ben Young, Glenn Houtz, Bernard Lee, Harold Lee, Dan Spelts, Lowell Friesen, Lolen Shirley, Charles Buchanan, Lowell Cornelius, Jerry Eastin, Don Mickels and Wendell Cornelius.
On the Elsie team were Corky Lee, Don Hanson, Harold Sexton, Don Steinwart, Ronnie Cutler, Ronald Colson, Vance Carothers, Leland Witt, Alva Lovenburg, George McGahan, Billie O’Connor and Bob Hanson.
The Wallace Wildcats included LeRoy Sparks, Sam Kinsinger, Dan O’Brien, Ward Clough, Duane Aylward, Bob Leak, Paul Hengen, Jim Orton and Clayton Ogier.
On the Venango Panther’s roster were Delbert Weers, Gene Ingram, Bill Houser, LaVern Ogden, Dwain McAdam, Boyd Harmier, Bob Derby, Kay Schneider, John Milroy, Carroll West, Bill Martin and Merwin Dodson.
The Paxton Tigers were Warren Compton, Don Holmstedt, Rock Roche, Burns Bowers, Don Perlinger, Gene Osborne, Dick Rietz, David Anderson, Gordon Marquette, George Marquette and Ed Pullen.
The Hayes Center Cardinals included Bernard Kittle, Bill Venhaus, M. F. Peterson, M.L. Peterson, Duane Fisher, Charles Peterson, Lemoline McKillip, Richard Counce, Richard Mintling, Leroy Bodeman, Hugh Laird and Paul Gigax.
The Grainton Bulldogs included W. Maupin, J. Klima, C. Maupin, G. Swanson, G. Skinner and T. Klima.
Tournament officials were Ronald Stewart of Venango and Howard Harms of Grainton.
Thanking sponsors for making printed programs available and helping promote “true sportsmanship and clean high school athletics” was the Madrid Quarterback Club.
Some of the businesses lending support were the Elsie Cafe, Cowles-White Lumber Company of Paxton, Annie’s Cafe of Venango, Grant’s Kuskie Brothers Grocery, The Gauger Store in Grant and Madrid, The Due Drop Inn in Hayes Center, The Madrid Cafe, Shirley’s Dray of Madrid where “hauling is our calling.”
Happily serving sandwiches, drinks, pastries and candy at the tournament was the Madrid Pep Club.
