On Tuesday, April 2 the Perkins County High School Quiz Bowl team competed at Sutherland in the ESU 16 District Quiz Bowl Tournament. Fourteen teams competed including Perkins County, Arthur, Brady, Hershey, Hyannis, Mullen, North Platte St. Patrick’s, Ogallala, Paxton, South Platte, Stapleton, Sutherland, Thedford and Wallace. This was a bracket-style, double elimination tournament.
Perkins County went 5-1 on the day and finished as district champions. They and second placer Ogallala qualify for state competition.
Finishing third was Wallace and fourth, Sutherland.
Perkins County won 35-0 against their first competitors, Brady. In their next match, Perkins County came away the victor against Mullen, 65-45.
“This was a huge comeback for us after being down by 20 points halfway through the match,” said Quiz Bowl coach Deanne Bishop.
Next, the Plainsmen took on Sutherland, who previously finished second in the conference meet, and won 60-0.
In their final match against Wallace, Perkins County won in sudden death overtime, 30-25.
Perkins County suffered their first loss of the day against Ogallala, who won 45-20.
“Since Ogallala already had one loss and we had none until this point, they had to play us again to force one team to lose for a second time,” explained Bishop.
However, Perkins County came back to win against Ogallala in the next match, their first win over Ogallala this season.
