After 33 years as an employee of Midwest Electric, Dave Engel will be able to do what he most favors in life following retirement—hang out at the golf course. However, Engel (who most people know by his nickname of “Turkey”) will be getting paid to enjoy his time at Pheasant Run Golf Course.
Engel has always been interested in the course maintenance job, volunteering a lot of his time in the past, so when the opening came up for the superintendent job, he applied.
Engel officially began his duties on March 1, but since then, the weather has been very uncooperative for getting much accomplished at the course located north of Grant along Highway 61.
Once snow melts and it warms up, his duties can kick into high gear and he can get to work on the goals he has for the course this summer.
He will take care of the greens, the fairways, and the tee boxes. He will oversee the watering, and handle maintenance issues with rental carts, mowers, the irrigation system, cart sheds, clubhouse, and other miscellaneous duties.
Mowing of the greens and fairways will be done by Gary Benge, with the help of Engel’s wife, Lisa.
Engel said one change he would like to make is to move the putting green to the west side of the clubhouse. He is also thinking about the possibly of moving or making some new tee boxes.
Engel’s hours at the course will be most days from sunup to midday.
The clubhouse/restaurant, which will be managed by Deanna Breazeale, will be open from noon to 6:30 p.m. most days, and hours will be later on league nights. It will be closed on Mondays.
Besides golf, Engel’s interests include fishing and hunting. He grew up in Perkins County and worked for the late Gerald Schroder after graduation, then a short period for Bullock Chevrolet followed by a one-year stint with the Nebraska Department of Roads before beginning his long-term career with Midwest Electric, retiring in January.
Engel and his wife, Lisa, have been married 35 years and have three children. Craig and wife Carol live in Genoa with children Forest and Ashley. Chris and wife Amber of Gretna have a new infant son, Landon,  born in late March. Cashia and husband Dave Dailey live in Grant with their three young children, Keegan, Kalli and Kenady.
