Hide your word

“I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you.” – Psalm 119:11
Just recently my middle son has come to realize that it is fun to save money. The little money that he has, he keeps in his Spiderman wallet. When he receives money for doing a chore he stuffs it in his wallet and proudly carries it around.
The key to him being able to save his money is not that he puts it in his wallet, it is that he hides it from his little brother. If his little brother happens to find it, he will take everything out of it. Whatever he had in it usually ends up getting lost. So he must find a good hiding place.
This same principle of my son hiding his money is also true of God’s word. As we look at God’s word, how often can we say to ourselves that we have hidden it in our heart? The word hidden could also be translated as store up.
As we think about storing up God’s word we are really stocking up on it for future use. Those future circumstances could be temptations to sin, life struggles, or unforeseen conditions. In those situations we would be able to pull out God’s word from our stockpile to carry us through.
All too often we are hit with those situations and don’t know where to turn because we do not know God’s word.
For many of us we read the Word but never know the Word. We do exactly what James 1:22-25 warns against – “Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says. Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like a man who looks at his face in a mirror and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like. But the man who looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom, and continues to do this, not forgetting what he has heard, but doing it–he will be blessed in what he does.”
These verses are challenging us to not just read the Word. We must read it with intent to obey. To be obedient children we must know and hide the Word in our heart. Then we will be ready when temptation comes, struggles arise, and unforeseen issues come up.
