New superintendent at helm in Wallace
By Jan Rahn
Wallace School has begun the new school term with a new superintendent.
Thomas Sandberg is living in the community during the week, but returns to his home in Axtell on the weekends.
His wife, Sue, is a nurse at Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney.
Sandberg had previously served for 21 years as elementary principal and superintendent in the Axtell district.
During that 21 years, he filled a shared superintendent position with Wilcox for four years and another two years in the Wilcox-Hildreth Public Schools.
For 15 years he was a teacher, elementary principal and elementary/middle school principal in Ashland-Greenwood.
Sandberg said back when he was an elementary student, his family moved around quite a bit. He lived in Holdrege during his junior high years and then graduated from high school in Beatrice.
He received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Education from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in elementary and special education, pursued a Master of Arts in Education degree, then received a Specialist Degree in Educational Administration from UNL.
The Sandbergs have three children, two grandchildren plus one due in November. One son has a landscaping business in Wisconsin, another lives in Rochester, Minn., and works as a nurse in open heart surgery at St. Mary’s Hospital (Mayo Clinic). Their expectant daughter lives in Omaha and works in marketing at Mutual of Omaha.
