PCS band travels to state fair for first time

Brian Erickson, music instructor at Perkins County Schools, led 28 students down the parade route at the Nebraska State Fair in Grand Island on Saturday.
The group played ‘Land of 1,000 Dances’ to jubilant crowds for nearly 30 minutes.
“This was a really good experience,” Erickson said, adding that despite the heat and wind, it was a beautiful day for a parade and the students made the school and community proud. “The kids had a really good sound and held formation together.”
After six rehearsals making up three hours of playing, the band was ready before the event and had fun while at the state fair.
While teaching in Gibbon Erickson took band members to the state fair each year, starting the tradition upon arriving at PCS this year.
“We always did it at Gibbon and I talked with the students about it and they were excited about going,” Erickson said.
According to Erickson, this is the first year that PCS has marched at the state fair and will likely not be the last.
“According to the kids, we will be doing it again. They really enjoyed it and it was such a great way to start the year,” Erickson said.
