At the Creek Valley Invite on Thursday, Sept. 5, the Perkins County girls golf squad was just edged by Dundy County/Stratton for second place.
Bridgeport won the invite with a team score of 412 while Dundy County/Stratton finished with a 464. Perkins County ended the day third with a team score of 466.
“The team shot the lowest score this season, even though a couple of girls had a tough day,” Perkins County girls golf coach Troy Kemling said. “The other three played well on another hot day.”
Leading the Plainsmen was Carra Johnson, ending up sixth overall. Johnson had a 108, scoring a 58 on the front nine and knocked eight strokes off of her back nine to race up the leaderboard.
“I am happy for Carra, as she equalled her all-time low with a 108. She played her best nine holes on her back nine by carding a 50,” Kemling said. “Her ball-striking was so much better today, along with improved putting.”
Hailey Sletten finished the day in eighth place overall, shooting a 113. Sletten had a 58 on the front nine and ended with a 55 on the back nine.
This is the second meet in a row that Sletten has finished in the top 10, which means she is catching up to her potential in the eyes of her coach.
“She is learning how good she is capable of being. She plays very well for a series of holes only to be undone by losing focus,” Kemling said. “She is working on some swing keys that, as the season continues, will become more automatic and easier to repeat.”
Just missing the top 10 for Perkins County included Capri Meyer. Kassidy Hernandez of Bridgeport closed out the top 10 with a 114 on the day and Meyer was just shy with a 117. Meyer shot a 62 in the first round and shaved seven strokes off of her score for a 55 in the second round.
“Capri played a much improved back nine by limiting big mistakes. It is just a matter of time until she finds herself inside the top 10 in a meet,” Kemling said.
Alexis Schmidt completed both rounds with a 128 (67-61) and Amanda Reichert finished with a 132 (69-63).
