The Perkins County Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) is stepping into the limelight with a major event on Monday, Oct. 21 at the football field in Grant.
‘Fields of Faith’ will start at 6:30 p.m. at the football field and in case of inclement weather will be moved inside to the gym.
Guest speaker at the event will be Rev. Dr. Diamond Philus, a pastor from India. He is in the area for a month and will be at the event, which is open to the public, to raise support for FCA and preach the word of God.
Also at the event there will be scripture readings from local youth leaders in FCA and a testimonial by Carlie Waitley.
The event on Oct. 21 is the first major event by the FCA since it started back up four years ago. A gap of several years predicated the resurgence of the group, led by Matt Waitley.
While playing basketball at Hastings College, Waitley attended a meeting of the FCA and it changed his life forever.
“I went to that meeting and gave my life to Christ,” Waitley said, adding that he saw a need for a chapter of the FCA in Perkins County. “We saw that there was a need for student athletes to have a God perspective in sports and life in general.”
For him, FCA is about looking at the big picture in life.
“I saw that God was an essential part of life. Without God, sports, or anything else, don’t really matter,” Waitley said. “I hope students get this perspective in their lives.”
Waitley ranches and owns an agronomy business while his wife, Sandy, teaches second grade at PCS elementary.
The group meets twice a month at Perkins County High School and is always looking for more members and volunteers.
Student leaders for the group are Carlie Waitley, Rebecca Cornelius, TJ Johnson and Shawn Sando. Adult leaders are Waitley, Monica Cole and  Ross Kurkowski.
Annually, the FCA chapter in Perkins County gives a student athlete of the year scholarship to one male and female athlete from PCS.
The scholarships are given to athletes that demonstrate the most Godly character and excel at sports.
Last year Quinton Hite and Michi Prante received the scholarships.
