Wildcats go 0-2 to start season PDF Print E-mail


Wallace Lady Wildcats opened the season with two heartbreaking losses.
The team traveled to Wauneta, Dec. 5, where the Broncos delivered a 26-55 loss. On Friday, Dec. 6, the Maywood Tigers traveled to Wallace, defeating the Wildcats 64-60.
The Wildcats struggled early with last year’s state qualifying team on Thursday night,  scoring two points to the Broncos 17 in the first quarter, and ending the first half 11-28.
Wauneta-Palisade’s Tayler Lee led the night in scoring 23 points. Junior Christina Daniels led Wallace in scoring with 17 points.
“Wauneta has always been a tough team to beat,” said Daniels. “We need to be ready for anything that comes toward us.”
Adding to the Wallace scoreboard were Hubbard- 4, M. Messersmith- 3, and May- 2. Offensively Maggie May brought down one rebound; Morgan Messersmith had 3 assists and May added two.
On the defensive end, Daniels brought down 9 rebounds, while Sara Hubbard added five. Alex Lundvall, M. Messersmith had two rebounds each, Hayley Storm and Mickayla Sheets had one.
May earned three steals, while Hubbard and Storm each had 1.
In Friday night action, the score remained fairly close throughout the game.
Lady Wildcats led at the end of the first half, 25-22, but were unable to maintain the lead through the second half, being outscored in the third quarter by five and in the fourth quarter by two.
Christina Daniels led the night in scoring, adding 31 points to the scoreboard. Maywood’s top scorer, Justine Stone, racked up 22 points, followed closely by Abbey Werkmeister with 20.
Wildcats assisting in the final score for Wallace were Hubbard- 12, Lundvall- 5, May- 4, M. Messersmith- 3, Storm- 2, Sheets- 2, and Aylward- 1. Junior Morgan Messersmith aided in the scoring of her teammates with six assists. The team posted 18 defensive rebounds for the night; Hubbard brought down 5, Daniels- 4, Lundvall- 3, Sheets-3, Storm- 2 and Aylward-1.
Although starting off with two losses, the Lady Wildcats (0-2) will be ready for the Maxell Tigers (1-1) when they come to Wallace to play Friday, Dec. 13.
