Toner to represent county at state tournament PDF Print E-mail

The state wrestling tournament starts today (Feb. 20) in Omaha and Perkins County will be represented by Garrett Toner (138-pounds).
PCS Head Wrestling Coach Dean Friedel was impressed with how Toner dominated his way through the competition and the experience gained by the younger wrestlers.
“Garrett did real well, pinned all of his opponents, and two of our other wrestlers each won a match. The younger guys kept improving throughout the year,” Friedel said.
Toner started the season at 145-pounds but dropped down to 138-pounds, gaining experience along the way.
“He started the season at 145 and hit a couple of tough dudes right out of the gate. This helped encourage him to go to 138,” Friedel said. “He has lost to quality opponents and has gained a good deal of experience even in the losses. He has made solid improvement in his takedowns and his ability to ride this season.”
Toner faces Brett Kinney of Elgin Pope John in the first round of the state tournament. Kinney has a record of 35-15 and placed fourth in his district.
The Toner has provided the example this season, which Friedel said will serve the younger wrestlers next season.
“He has pushed the younger kids and has been an inspiration. He has demonstrated what hard work and dedication can do in the end,” Friedel said.
