Former Grant resident, Craig Engel, who now lives in Genoa, was gravely injured in a car accident on Sept. 20, 2013 and air lifted to the hospital.
He is the son of Dave and Lisa Engel of Grant, and after nine months, Craig was returning home to Genoa on June 24 to his wife Carol, foster daughter Ashley, seven, and step-son Forrest, 20.
Sharing the past months of worrying, praying, and supporting Craig and his family, his mother said, “We appreciate everyone’s concerns and prayers for Craig and all of us since the accident. By Craig’s hard work, determination, and most of all the power of prayers, Craig is here with us.”
He and his father-in-law were broadsided by a pickup on a county road. Six people were involved in the accident, with one young man dying at the scene. All of the others were transported to Bryan Memorial Hospital in Lincoln.
Craig was given CPR at the scene. He was transported by Lincoln Flight for Life and according to his mother was brought back to life before  arriving in Lincoln where he immediately underwent surgery.
He survived the surgery and remained in intensive care for two weeks prior to being transferred to Madonna Rehabilitation Hospital in October. From there he went to Quality Living Inc. in November for more intensive therapy.
Craig is still progressing each day and will be employed at the lumberyard in Genoa. His mother said he is able to drive a golf cart to get around town and hopes to eventually be able to return to driving a vehicle.
