Donald L. Newth - December 22, 2008

Donald Leon Newth, 70, of Lewellen, Neb., passed away Monday, Dec. 22, 2008, at Great Plains Regional Medical Center in North Platte, Neb., after a short but courageous battle with leukemia.
 Don was born March 19, 1938 in Julesburg, Colo., the son of Harold and Evelyn (Witthuhn) Newth.  He and his younger sister and brother grew up on a farm outside of Venango, Neb. He graduated from Venango High School in 1956. 
Don was an MP in the army from 1958-61 where he was stationed in Italy.  He then went on to graduate from the University of Nebraska at Lincoln with a Masters Degree in Education and Administration in 1967. 
On June 16, 1962 he married Grace Ann Walters in Denver.  Don taught in several schools in Nebraska before settling in Lewellen in 1970. Once in Lewellen he was the superintendent of Lewellen Schools, taught chemistry and math and was also the girls basketball coach. He retired from teaching in 1998. 
Don was very active after retirement by sitting on many boards including the Volunteers of America and the Lewellen First United Methodist Church Board.  He was elected a Garden County Commissioner in 2002, and then reelected in 2006. 
He was an avid golfer and enjoyed playing the piano, gardening, fishing and hunting. He was an enthusiastic sports fan, especially anything Huskers.  He also enjoyed traveling to watch his grandchildren participate in their many activities.
Survivors include his wife, Grace A. Newth of Lewellen; daughters, Deborah and husband Dean Dike of North Platte, Katrina and husband Dave Twomey of Ogallala, Neb.; grandchildren, Airman Anthony Dike USN of Brunswick, Maine, Kendra and Raymond Dike of North Platte, Kylee Twomey of Lincoln, Neb., Maggie Twomey of Ogallala; sister, Janeen and husband Richard Dwinell of Harker Heights, Texas; brother, Dennis Newth of Las Cruces, N.M.; uncle, Burle Newth of Venango; aunt, Ilva Jean Powers of Silver Creek, Neb.; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. 
He was preceded in death by his parents and grandparents.
Funeral services were held Monday, Dec. 29, 2008 at the Garden County Junior High School in Lewellen with Pastor Ray Weinerman officiating.  Interment was in the Venango Cemetery in Venango with military honors.

Holechek Funeral Home and Cremations in Oshkosh, Neb., and Bullock-Long Funeral Home in Grant, Neb., were in charge of the arrangements.
