Emil Hanson - December 18, 2008
Emil Hanson was born on Dec. 30, 1922 west of Elsie, Neb. He was the third of five children born to Oscar and Belle Brittain Hanson. Emil grew upon the Hanson farm and attended school in Elsie, graduating in 1940.
Emil farmed after graduation and was married to Eveline Carter on Oct. 16, 1944 in North Platte, Neb. Emil joined the United States Army in April 1945. He was on a ship to Japan when the war officially ended, but he served with occupational troops until September 1946. After his discharge, he returned to the farm.
Emil attended night school in Sutherland, Neb. after his discharge and learned welding and electrical work. In 1953 the family moved to their farm south of the Hanson farmstead.
In addition to his farming, Emil served as the manager of the Elsie Equity Coop which operated a hardware store, feed mill, and lumber yard. He was also very skilled at carpenter work and worked on many different projects.
Emil and Eveline moved into Elsie in 2006 and to Centennial Park in North Platte in 2007. Eveline died in 2007 and Emil died in the Centennial Park nursing facility early Thursday morning, Dec. 18, 2008. He had reached the age of 85.
Emil was very community minded. He was active in the United Methodist Church where he served as the usher for many years and was part of the United Methodist Men. He was a past member of the Volunteer Fire Department and the Commercial Club. He was a longtime active member of the Odd Fellows Lodge. He belonged to the Elsie American Legion Post and the V.F.W. He served on the election board and was recognized statewide as a long term bell ringer to signal voting booths were open.
In addition to his parents and his wife, Emil was preceded in death by three sisters, Ester Harbeson, Pauline Johnson, and Edith Hunter and one son-in-law, Gary Williams.
He is survived by his two daughters, Irene Williams of North Platte and Mary and husband William Wheatley of Lincoln, Neb; six grandsons and nine great-grandchildren; his brother, Dale and wife Lillian Hanson of Elsie; other relatives and friends.
Services were held Monday, Dec. 22, 2008 at 10:30 a.m., at the Elsie United Methodist Church with Pastor Linda Battello officiating.
Carol Robertson and Bob Cummings provided the music.
Casket bearers were Tom Hanson, Jim Hanson, Gene Harbeson, Kent Hanson, Dan Hanson, and Don Harbeson.
Interment was in the Elsie Cemetery with flag presentation by the Elsie Legion.
Bullock-Long Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
