Viola Mae (Keller) Smith - May 07, 2010


Viola Mae (Keller)Smith was born on May 27, 1918 in Grant, Neb. to Miles and Hazel (Erlewine) Keller. She passed away on Friday May, 7, 2010 at the Golden Living Center in Schuyler, Neb. at the age of 91 years, 11 months and 10 days.
She grew up in Grant where she attended grade school and graduated from Grant High School in 1935.
Vi and her sister Betty were raised by their grandparents and enjoyed many days playing behind the church that was next to their house.
Vi married Myron “Budd” Smith on Feb. 29, 1936 in Holyoke, Colo. and to this union three children were born: Karma, Bruce and Neil. Vi and Budd raised their family on several farms near Madrid, Neb. and Cedar Rapids, Neb. before moving to Valley, Neb. in 1961.
Vi has always been a homemaker and a strong matriarch of her family. She was active in extension club, Tripoli Card Club and the Methodist Church
She enjoyed gardening, dancing, playing cards and the horse shows that the entire family was involved in. Vi liked to relax by savoring a hot cup of coffee. She loved family gatherings, eating dinner out, and in later years, crafts at her assisted living apartment.
Vi was preceded in death by her parents Miles and Hazel, husband Myron “Budd,” son Bruce and infant grandson Tim Ritzdorf.
She is survived by son Neil of Valley; daughter Karma and husband Richard Ritzdorf of Schuyler; eight grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren, six great-great-grandchildren and sister Betty Mackinnon of Grand Island, Neb.
Funeral services were held May 10, 2010 at the United Faith Community Church in Valley with Rev. Carl Ratcliff officiating.
Pallbearers were Brendan Ritzdorf, Kent Ritzdorf, Rick Ritzdorf, Lee Shemek, Michael Shemek and Jeff Smith.
Burial was in the Prospect Hill Cemetery in Elkhorn, Neb.
Reichmuth Funeral Homes of Elkhorn, Valley and Yutanwas in charge of arrangements.
