Charles Burnham - May 17, 2010


Charles Burnham was born on Oct. 4, 1920 at Winner, S.D. He was the third of four children born to Warren and Ona Hollenbeck Burnham. The family moved to Arnold, Neb. when Chuck was an infant and later to the Madrid, Neb. area where he attended school.
He graduated from Madrid High School in 1939. After graduation, he worked as a mechanic for Edgar McCray at the Grant Motor Company.
Chuck was married to Mary Richmond at Grant, Neb. in 1942. One son, Dennis, was born to this union.
Chuck enlisted in the Army Air Force in July of 1942. He was stationed at air bases in California and Arizona and later piloted B-25s over India where he served in weather reconnaissance. He had received his honorable discharge in 1946.
He moved to Denver in 1963 where he owned and operated service stations and later worked as the night manager for the Rocky Mountain Auto Parts Store.
He was married to Susan Hays on Oct. 18, 1968 in Sterling, Colo. They lived in Denver until 1990 when they returned to Grant. Chuck had been in failing health for the past several years and had been moved to the Golden Ours Convalescent Home in Grant in 2008 where he died on Monday night, May 17, 2010. He had reached the age of 89.
Chuck was a member of the V.F.W.
In addition to his parents, Chuck was preceded in death by his wife, Sue, who died this past March; one sister, Ruth Schnitzer and one brother, Willis.
He is survived by his son, Dennis, of Denver; stepson, John and his wife Lina Avery of San Diego and stepdaughter Judy Johnson and husband Marty Goans of Denver; Two grandchildren, Jessica and Paul Bishop; sister, Helen Reeder of Anchorage, Alaska; sister-in-law on the Burnham side, Carol of Grant; other relatives and friends.
Services were held at the Bullock-Funeral Home in Grant with John Long officiating.
Burial was in the Grant Fairview Cemetery with flag presentation by the Perkins County Veterans.
Bullock-Long Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
