Grace Gartner - December 31, 2009

Grace Gartner was born on a farmstead in Hayes County, Neb. on Jan. 5, 1914. She was one of three children born to Earl and Anna Mary Schimpf Elwood. She attended rural school and later attended high school in Hayes Center.
Grace was married to Henry Brown in November of 1934. One son, Leonard, was born to this union. Henry was killed in a farm related accident in 1937.
Grace was married to Carl Gartner in 1940 at McCook, Neb. Two children were born to this union–a daughter, Betty Ann and a son who died as an infant.
Carl and Grace moved to Portland, Ore. at the beginning of World War II. While Carl was in the service, Grace worked in the shipyards during the war. After his discharge, they remained in Portland. They returned to Nebraska in 1973 and located in Grant.
Carl died in 1997 and Grace moved to Sunset Haven. She moved to Golden Ours Convalescent Home in January of 2008. Where she died Wednesday, Dec. 31, 2008. She was 94 years old.
While in Portland, Grace attended a Pentacostal Church and attended the United Methodist Church in Grant.
In addition to her parents and two husbands, Grace was preceded in death by her two children, Leonard Brown and Betty Ann Bloom; her brother and her sister.
She is survived by her daughter-in-law, Judy Brown; 10 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren; other relatives and friends.
Committal Services were held Saturday, Jan. 3, 2009 at the Morningview Cemetery in Wallace, Neb. with John Long officiating.
Casket bearers were Mike Gartner, Bill Gartner, Jeff Schrum, Chuck Gartner, Danny Martin and Marty Trimble.

Bullock-Long Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
