Herschel Wayman Sheffield - August 06, 2010

Herschel Wayman Sheffield, age 90, of Wilcox, Neb., passed away on Friday, Aug. 6, 2010 at the Christian Homes Care Community in Holdrege, Neb. Services were held at Mount Calvary Lutheran Church in Holdrege on Aug. 10. Herschel was born on Sept. 17, 1919 on the family farm in Frontier County near Orafino, Neb., the second of three boys born to Floyd and Edith (Presler) Sheffield. He was baptized at a young age and went to grade school at the Independence School District #48. He went to high school at Orafino, Neb., graduating with the class of 1937.
Hersh was united in marriage to Berdena May Pfeiffer on Dec 27, 1948 and to this union five children were born. Berdena passed away on March 25, 1967 at the age of 42.
On Aug. 1, 1970, he married Edna Mae (Hinrichs) Lundeen.
Herschel owned and operated Sheffield Real Estate and Insurance Agency in Holdrege and also developed a farmstead with his son, Monte, near Wallace, Neb. in 1973.
Herschel attended St. John’s Lutheran Church in Wilcox, was past member of the Board of Directors of the Natural Resource District in Holdrege and Bethany Home in Minden, Neb.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Berdena, an infant daughter, Katherine, and two brothers, Frank and Leslie.
Survivors include his wife, Edna of Wilcox; his four children: Patricia Sheffield and her partner Brian Osborn of Holdrege, Alan Sheffield and his wife Cindy of Grand Island, Neb. Monte Sheffield and his wife Ruth of Wallace, John Sheffield and his wife Kari of McCook, Neb.; three stepchildren: Brad Lundeen and his wife Pat of Wilcox, Patty Galbraith and her husband Harry of Grand Island, Ave Lundeen and his wife Denise of Axtell, Neb.; 10 grandchildren: Amy and Jessica Stevenson, Chad (Kayla) Sheffield, Courtney (Brandon) Hesser, Matt (Wendy) Sheffield, Wendi (Mike) Hadley, Mollie (Adam) Akerson, Kaleb, Elizabeth and Erik Sheffield, eight step-grandchildren, Megan and Ryan Wilson, Joe, Scott and Katie Lundeen, John and Anna Galbraith, and Jon (Carrie) Spurlock, seven great-grandchildren: Lainey, Sophie, Sawyer, Aldyn, Emerson, Caden and Chase; sisters-in-law: Dottie and Bernice Sheffield and a host of other relatives and friends.
Memorials have been established to the Fire and Rescue Department, Community Improvement Association and St. John’s Lutheran Church all of Wilcox.
