Herbert Elisha Courtain - August 31, 2010


Herbert Elisha Courtain was born on Oct. 20, 1935 in Almena, Kan. He passed away at the Ponderosa Villa in Crawford, Neb. on Aug. 31, 2010. He had reached the age of 74 years.
Herbert grew up on a farm near Precept, Neb. He graduated eighth grade May 23, 1952. He worked for farmers in the area until he went to work for Missouri Valley road construction.
He was with Missouri Valley for 10 years. He worked at the co-op in Crawford in the winter when he was not working construction. He helped build I-80 in Nebraska.
When he decided to settle in Crawford he worked for Crawford motors a number of years. He worked as maintenance man for the hospital in Crawford. When the hospital was closed he continued to work for the clinic in Crawford. He also worked for the city in the summers taking care of the park grounds and swimming pool.
He bowled on Monday and Thursday night leagues for a number of years. He enjoyed working with old cars. He has a 1917 yellow car that he drove in 4th of July parades in Crawford. He would take anyone for a ride in it anytime they would ask. He was very proud of his car.
He was preceded in death by his father Elisha F. Courtain and mother Mamie, his older brother Fred, and a niece Gohana.
He leaves to mourn two sisters Hazel and husband Merle Gimeson of Grant, Neb., Beulah and husband Don Vahle of Long Island, Kan.; three nieces and four nephews.
Services were held Sept. 3, 2010 in Crawford at the community building with Dr. Russ Seger officiating.
Burial was in the Crawford Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Dewayne Lamberrt, Troy Quay, Bruce Corbin, DennisVick, Steve Green, Lonnie Douthit and Duaine Seegrist.
Chamberlain Chapel was in charge of arrangements.
