Alene Martinson - October 22, 2010
Alene Martinson was born on May 8, 1923 in Castro County, Texas. She was the third of eight children born to Claude and Dora Turner Johnson. She grew up in the Dimmitt, Texas community where she attended high school.
Alene was married to Manfrid “Sandy” Martinson on Feb. 28, 1940 in Clovis, N.M. They made their home in different communities in Colorado and New Mexico.
The family moved to Grant, Neb. in 1960 when Sandy became employed by Adams Lumber. In addition to raising her family, Alene worked at the hospital, T.R.W., the Banner Cafe, and the Perkins County Assessor’s office.
Alene continued to maintain her home in Grant after Sandy died in 1991. She was living with her daughter Shirley and her granddaughter Shelia in Grant when she moved to Garden City, Kan. to live with her daughter, Lynda, in October of 2009.
She had been in failing health and was only able to stay at Kevin and Lynda’s by the help of their friends, Cheryl Rilinger and Tonya Simon. She died on Friday afternoon, Oct. 22, 2010 in Garden City. She had reached the age of 87.
In addition to her parents and husband, Alene was preceded in death by two sisters, one brother, and her son, Claudell who died in 1996.
She is survived by three daughters, Phyllis and husband Ed Fauth of Lincoln, Neb., Shirley Howell of Grant, and Lynda and husband Kevin Turner of Garden City; her daughter-in-law, Ruth Martinson of Rangely, Colo.; 10 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren; three sisters, Imogene McKinney, Melba Smith, Beverly Russell, and her brother Jimmy Johnson, all of Texas; other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held Oct. 26 at the Grant New Life Fellowship Church with Pastors Vince Carrig and Russ Gaar officiating.
Burial was in the Grant Fairview Cemetery.
A memorial has been established.
Bullock-Long Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
