Fern Benge - November 15, 2010
Fern Benge was born on Feb. 1, 1918 at Benkelman, Neb. She was the youngest of three children born to Harvey and Louida Burrell Selby. She grew up on a farm south of Max, Neb. and attended high school in Benkelman, graduating in 1936.
Fern was married to Forrest Benge of Wauneta, Neb. on March 21, 1937 at Oberlin, Kan. They made their home in Wauneta and McCook, Neb. before moving to Grant, Neb. in 1955 where Forrest was involved in the propane business.
Fern continued to maintain her home and raise her family after Forrest suffered a fatal heart attack in 1964. Fern worked for Moser’s Department Store and later for Dolores Sexson; served as the Grant City Librarian, and was the first director of the senior center in Grant.
Fern had moved to Park Ridge Assisted Living and because of failing health was transferred to the Golden Ours Convalescent Home last month where she died early Monday morning, Nov. 15, 2010. She had reached the age of 92.
Fern had been an active member of the First Congregational Church, the Eastern Star and P.E.O. chapters, and a past member of the Grant Women’s Club.
In addition to her parents and husband, Fern was preceded in death by one brother, Donald Selby, and her daughter-in-law, Colleen Benge, who died in June of this year.
She is survived by two sons, Gary and wife Kay Benge and Don Benge, all of Grant; two daughters, Marcia Coleson and Cheryl Benge, both of Kansas City, Mo.; nine grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren, and three great-great grandchildren; one brother, LeRoy and wife Anita Selby of Walla Walla, Wash.; other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held (today) Thursday, Nov. 18 at 10:30 a.m. at the Grant First Congregational Church with Pastor Larry Booth officiating.
Burial will be in the Grant Fairview Cemetery.
