Wendell (Wendy) McCown - January 17, 2011

Wendell “Wendy” McCown was born on Dec. 7, 1939 at North Platte, Neb. He was the third of 11 children born to Norman and Neva Dyer McCown. The family lived in Wallace, Neb. where Wendy graduated from high school in 1958. After high school Wendy took on different jobs which required travel throughout the country.
Wendy was married to Karen Houchin on June 16, 1967. They moved to Venango, Neb. shortly after and raised their seven children.
While in Venango Wendy was employed at the Dudden Alfalfa Mill and later worked in the parts department for Dudden’s John Deere implement dealership.
For many years, Wendy managed and operated Tharp’s Sale Auction in Grant. He later worked at the Mercantile Store in Ogallala, Neb. before retiring due to failing health.
Karen died in 1988 from a malignancy and Wendy continued to live at his home in Venango. He died at his home on Monday morning, Jan. 17, 2011 of an apparent heart attack. He had reached the age of 71.
Wendy always enjoyed following his family and their many activities. He had a passion for music and spent many hours entertaining family and friends of various age groups with his voice and his keyboard. He also belonged to several bowling leagues through the years and appreciated the friendship bonds he had developed through that activity. He had also served on the Venango Volunteer Fire Department. He attended the Venango Community Church as long as his health permitted.
In addition to his parents and wife, Wendy was preceded in death by two brothers and one son Anthony.
He is survived by those who loved him; two sons, Steve and his wife Pam of Wylie, Texas and Gary of Pueblo West, Colo.; four daughters, Tammy Portenier of Venango, Jackie Anderson and her companion Kelly Tridle of Ogallala, Shelly and her husband Scott Hoyt of Hoxie, Kan., and Vicki and her husband Eric Maupin of Kearney, Neb.; 16 grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, four brothers, four sisters, other relatives and many friends.
Funeral services were held Jan, 20, 2011 at the Venango Community Church with Pastor Chris Costrini officiating.
Burial was in the Venango Cemetery.
Bullock-Long Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
