Gerald Morris Cohen - February 17, 2011
Gerald Morris Cohen passed away on Feb. 17, 2011. He was born Nov. 14, 1925 on the family farm south of Wallace, Neb. to William and Mary Agnes (Sullivan) Cohen.
He grew up and lived his entire life in the Wallace area, until they relocated to North Platte, Neb. in 2004. He attended Wallace School and graduated with the class of 1943.
Gerald married Carolyn Yocum on May 8, 1948 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Wallace. To this union, three children were born: Jerome, Jennifer and Jeremy.
Gerald served in the US Navy in WW II and the Korean War. He was a farmer, rancher, and owner and operator of Cohen LP Gas.
He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Wallace and Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church in North Platte. He was a lifetime member of the American Legion and VFW. He was active in the community and helped get phone lines into Wallace, was a committee member of the Highway 23 project, on the building committee for St. Mary’s Church, served the church as a lector and acolyte and was active as president of the commercial club.
Gerald and Carolyn received the Old Settler’s Award at the Buffalo Bill Rodeo and were honored as Grand Marshals at the Wallace Fall Festival.
Jerry will be remembered for his love and commitment to his wife, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He had an amazing memory, work ethic, and ability to be busy and get things done.
He really enjoyed his family and looked forward to times when he could spend time with his kids, grandkids and great-grandkids, talking to them and teasing them.
He is survived by his dedicated and loving wife, Carolyn, his daughter Jennifer and husband Dennis Sand of Bertrand, Neb., his son, Jeremy and his wife Mary Cohen of Denver, his daughter-in-law, Connie Cohen of Greeley, Colo., his grandchildren, Jeff and wife Dana Cohen, Amy and husband Troy Bowen of Denver, John Cohen, Elizabeth and husband Zane Stalkup of Greeley, Jill Sand, Tiffany and husband Ryan Hutzel, Josh and wife Andi Sand, Bethany Sand, all of Lincoln, Neb., Jonathan and wife Mandy Sand of Bertrand, and Maeve Cohen of Denver; great-grandchildren Thomas, Daniel, Alexandra, Kimberlin, and JD Cohen, Ty, Lainy, and Cooper Bowen, Dawson Stalkup, Peyton and Grant Hutzel, Cohen, Livie, and Sawyer Sand, and Adrian Sand. He is also survived by his sister, Catherine Coder of Lincoln and a brother-in-law, Paul Coder of Wellfleet, Neb., as well as many nieces, nephews, and friends.
He was preceded in death by his son, Jerome Cohen, his parents, William and Mary Cohen, brothers and sisters-in-law, Eugene and Wilma Cohen, Frances and wife Pat Cohen and Jo Cohen Gomes, Robert and Eileen Cohen, Bill Cohen, his sisters and brother-in-law, Mary and Warren Smith, Genevieve Coder and brother-in-law, George Coder.

Mass of Christian Burial was Feb. 21 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Wallace.
Burial was in the Morning View Cemetery near Wallace.
Carpenter Memorial Chapel in North Platte was in charge of arrangements.
A memorial has been established in his memory.
