Marie Kurkowski - February 04, 2009

Marie Kurkowski was born on April 9, 1905 at Ft. Calhoun, Neb. She was the seventh of nine children born to John and Anne Henrichsen Moller.
The family moved to the Ashland, Neb. area when Marie was a young girl and she attended school through the 10th grade. In 1920 the Moller family loaded their possessions and livestock on a train and traveled west to Grant, Neb. The family lived northwest of town and Marie worked on an area dairy farm.
Marie was married to Herman Kurkowski on Dec. 21, 1929 at the Moller farm home. They moved to a farm where Marie’s grandson, Kelvin, lives today. When her son Richard got married, he stayed on the farm and Herman and Marie moved into Grant. After Richard’s family moved to another location, Herman and Marie moved back to the farm.
They retired in 1973 and moved into Grant where Marie lived the rest of her life. Herman died in 1977 and Marie continued to maintain her home until 2002 when she moved to the Golden Ours Convalescent Home. Her health and her mind stayed good until she died peacefully early Wednesday morning, Feb. 4, 2009. She had reached the age of 103 years, nine months, and 25 days.
Marie was a charter and active member of the Grant Zion Lutheran Church and the Ladies Aid. (Her father was one of a small group of men who chartered the church in 1924.) She was a past member of the Sawyer Club. She always enjoyed her flower garden and was an avid reader.
In addition to her parents and husband, Marie was preceded in death by one sister and seven brothers; a granddaughter, Shelly Kurkowski; and two grandsons, Mark Blomenkamp and Jack Kurkowski.
She is survived by her son, Richard and wife Harreette Kurkowski of rural Grant; two daughters, Carrol and husband Allen Blomenkamp of Broadwater, Neb., and Catherine and husband Darrell Pierce of Grant; five grandsons, Kelvin and Clayton Kurkowski, Mike Blomenkamp, Brian and Barry Pierce; 17 great-grandchildren; four great-great grandchildren, other relatives and friends.
Services were held Saturday, Feb. 7 at the Grant Zion Lutheran Church with Pastor Ron Krause officiating.
Music was provided by Evelyn Gengenbach and the congregation.
Casket bearers were Kelvin Kurkowski, Clayton Kurkowski, Brett Kurkowski, Mike Blomenkamp, Brian Pierce, and Barry Pierce.
Burial was in the Grant Cemetery.
