Melinda Nelson - May 07, 2011
Melinda Nelsen was born on Nov. 6, 1957 in Ogallala, Neb. She was the only child born to Albert and Margaret Kraft Nelsen.
She grew up on the Nelsen farm northeast of Grant, Neb. and attended school in Grant where she graduated from Perkins County High School in 1976.
After graduation she began working in North Platte, Neb. at Skaggs and later at Lots to Love. She decided to go back to school and graduated from Mid Plains Community College.
After her father became ill and was admitted to the nursing home, she returned to help with the farm. Albert died in 1984 and Melinda remained on the farm to help her mother. Margaret died in 2000.
Melinda had developed a malignancy several months ago but continued to live on the farm until she moved to Premier Estates in North Platte where she died Saturday morning, May 7, 2011. She had reached the age of 53.
While Melinda was in school in Grant she was involved in 4-H where she developed her love for crafting. She and her mother always found joy in attending local craft fairs. She was active for a period at the Perkins County Senior Center in Grant where she was always willing to help with any craft project and was responsible for doing the bulletin board there. In the past few years, Melinda became involved with the Venango Community Church whose congregation became like family to her.
In addition to her parents, Melinda was preceded in death by several aunts and uncles.
She is survived by her grandmother Lucille Kraft in North Platte; aunts from her mother’s side, Vee Griffiths, Florence and husband Bob Kosmacek, Leona Halbert, Ruby Kraft, and Myra Kraft; two cousins from the Nelsen side, Evelyn Ross and Shirley Russell; special friends who helped Melinda with the farm these past years, Jimmy and Lupe Jimenez; other relatives and friends-especially her Venango Church family.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, May 11, 2011 at the Venango Community Church with Pastors Chris Costrini and Kevin Hausman officiating.
Burial was in the Grant Fairview Cemetery.
