Thelma Barnes - June 28, 2011
Thelma (T.J.) Barnes died June 28, 2011 at her home in Tijeras, N.M. at the age of 81.
Thelma was born at Madrid, Neb., the daughter of Charles E. and Evelyn M. (Tickle) Erlewine and graduated from Madrid High School with the class of 1947.
She attended and graduated from nursing school at Bryan Memorial Hospital in Lincoln, Neb. She obtained her advanced education as a nurse anesthetist at the University of Nebraska, Lincoln and St. Elizabeth’s Hospital in Lincoln and worked in health care until her retirement.
She married William Barnes on June 5, 1965 in the United States Air Force chapel at the Lincoln Airbase in Lincoln.
Her husband was in the United States Air Force and later employed by the U.S. Department of Energy and served overseas and stateside until his retirement.
Thelma and Bill loved to travel and had visited almost all 50 states, plus several foreign countries.
She loved sewing, camping, RVing and visiting family. She was very active in Shriners, bagpipe bands and veteran’s activities.
Mr. and Mrs. Barnes lived in Ogallala, Neb., from 1974 to 1982 where she was employed by the Ogallala Community Hospital as a nurse anesthetist.
She is survived by her husband, William (Bill) Barnes of Tijeras, N.M.; one brother, Lyle and wife Clara Erlewine of Ogallala; a sister Erna Rae and husband John Lee of Madrid; a sister-in-law Jessie Grimes of Pahrump, Nev., and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins, as well as countless friends and neighbors.
She was preceded in death by her parents and three nephews, Tracy Erlewine, Matthew Lee and Douglas Lee.
