Earl Kenneth Gibson, Sr. - February 09, 2009Earl Kenneth Gibson, Sr., age 91, of North Platte, Neb., formerly of Wallace, Neb., died Monday, Feb. 9, 2009 at Linden Court in North Platte.
Earl was born on Dec. 22, 1917 at Wallace. He was the oldest of two sons born to Harry and Sadie Ferrell Gibson.
Earl grew up in the Wallace area and attended rural school. He started high school in Wallace but had to quit after his father died so he could help operate the farm.
Earl met Ione J. Hawkinson in Imperial, Neb., and they were later married on April 17, 1938 in Venango, Neb. Five children were born to this union. They made their home in the Wallace and Grainton, Neb., areas before moving to Morrill, Neb.
They moved back to the Wallace area where they resided the majority of their 70 years of marriage. They retired to town in 1979 and moved to North Platte in 2000 to be closer to family. In 2006, Earl and Ione moved to the Sutherland Care Center before moving to Linden Court in North Platte.
Earl took great pride in farming many years in the Grainton and Wallace area. He also ran a dairy and repaired small engines. Often lending a helping hand to friends and neighbors. Often in his later years he was an enthusiastic collector of toy tractors, trucks and cars. He also enjoyed woodworking and filled his children’s homes with homemade items. He enjoyed family get-togethers, playing cards, and taking photographs of children and grandchildren. Earl was a member of Beautiful Savior Lutheran Church.
Survivors include his five children, Marlene and husband Joseph Estermann of Wellfleet, Neb., Earl Kenneth Jr. and wife Beverly Gibson of Geneva, Neb., Deloris and husband Herman Grauerholz of Sutherland, Neb., Connie and husband Kim Stewart of North Platte, Neb., and Rodney Carl and wife Carol Gibson of Arnold, Neb.; 14 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; two sisters-in-law, Dorothy Shefneer of Sidney, Neb., and Linnea Gibson of Wallace, also many nieces, nephews and other family.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Ione in 2008, a brother Warren Gibson and two great-grandsons.
Funeral services were held Saturday, Feb. 14, 2009 at Beautiful Savior Lutheran Church in North Platte with Pastor Bob Deardoff officiating. Interment was at the Morningview Cemetery in Wallace. The family has established a memorial.
Bullock-Long Funeral Home in Grant and Odean Colonial Chapel At C & Sycamore in North Platte was in charge of arrangements.
